Celebrating VE Day in Style

With May being the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we made sure to provide our residents with a week full of celebrations! They began on Wednesday, 7th May, where we met up with friends at both Thornfield and The Check House care home to show our respect and gratefulness for those who sacrificed themselves and fought for not only our country but many others in Europe. We understand the importance of building a community and allowing our residents to lead a life full of the things they choose, and it meant a lot to them to be able to come together and celebrate in such a wonderful way.
We spent the day at Seaton Tramway, where the volunteers and staff came together and made the day even more special. Our residents had the opportunity to connect with their friends and take quiet moments of reflection, especially for those who lived through this period.

When we got home, residents also enjoyed a musical sing-along and quiz where they sang and danced to their favourite pastime tunes. The quiz was very close in results, with lots of camaraderie and friendly competition. To finish off the day, we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea made by our talented chefs and discussed how life now is so different to when they were younger. It was fascinating for our team to see how life when our residents were younger is so different to the current day.
Our celebrations continued on the 8th May, where we brought back some old school memories and welcomed Paul Stevens in to perform. He is a common favourite entertainer for our residents and brought a true sense of nostalgia and joy to all of us.
The highlight of this day was when a lovely gentleman surprised his wife by showing up in his full uniform and medals to show his respect and tell his life stories. It was beautiful to hear about how they met and what his life was like serving. Lots of residents had questions for him, and it is clear to say he made a lot of new friends on this day!

To finish off our celebrations, we joined the local community at Minster Green in Axminster on Saturday, 10th. With the sun shining, it was a great way to round up VE Day alongside friends, loved ones and the wider community.
It is important to us at Silverleigh Care Home to provide our residents with the opportunity to stay engaged and honour traditions that mean a lot to them. To find out more about the first-class lifestyle we offer to our residents or to experience the difference for yourself, book a tour! We can’t wait to meet you.
