Doris’s Story: Finding Friendship,

Confidence and a New Lease of Life

When Doris Knight moved to Silverleigh Care Home in March 2026, the focus was on ensuring she was comfortable and supported following a difficult period of declining health.

At 89 years old, Doris had been living independently in Seaton for many years. However, following a fall and a subsequent hospital admission, it became clear that managing safely at home was becoming increasingly challenging. Her physical health was fluctuating, her mood was very low and, after spending more time at home on her own, she had become increasingly isolated from the social life she had always enjoyed.

Doris was admitted to Silverleigh for end-of-life support, but her journey would soon take an unexpected and heartening turn.

Missing the Life She Loved

Throughout her life, Doris had always been a sociable and active person. She enjoyed spending time with friends, getting involved in her local community and participating in activities such as bowls. Being around people and maintaining meaningful connections had always been an important part of who she was.

As her health declined, those opportunities became less frequent. Living alone and spending more time at home had begun to impact both her physical wellbeing and her confidence. Family members noticed that she was no longer able to enjoy the activities and social interactions that had once brought her so much happiness.

When she arrived at Silverleigh, the team quickly recognised that supporting Doris would involve much more than meeting her physical care needs. Helping her reconnect with the things she loved would be just as important.

Rediscovering Community

From the beginning, Doris embraced life at Silverleigh.

Rather than spending time alone in her room, she gravitated towards the communal areas where she could chat with other residents and take part in activities. Before long, she had formed a close friendship group with like-minded residents, and today she can often be found sitting with friends around the tables, sharing stories, laughter and conversation.

The social side of life has become one of Doris's favourite parts of living at Silverleigh. She enjoys joining in with activities throughout the home, from arts and crafts projects to helping create bunting for celebrations and special events. She particularly enjoys parties and social gatherings and recently attended a local tea dance alongside residents from one of Silverleigh's sister homes, an experience she thoroughly enjoyed.

When the weather is kind, Doris can often be found enjoying time in the garden, and she also loves joining the regular outings organised by the home using the minibus, which helps residents stay connected to the local community.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Over the weeks and months following her arrival, the positive changes became increasingly noticeable.

Doris's appetite returned and she began enjoying the meals on offer throughout the home. As a result, she gained weight and became physically stronger. Her confidence improved, and she started taking greater pride in her appearance, particularly enjoying visits to the home's in-house hairdresser.

Most importantly, her overall wellbeing improved significantly. What had initially been expected to be an end-of-life placement gradually evolved into something very different. As Doris's health, confidence and quality of life improved, she transitioned from nursing care into residential care, allowing her to continue enjoying the active and social lifestyle she had rediscovered.

A Family's Perspective

The improvements have been clear not only to the team but also to those closest to Doris.

Her daughter-in-law, Julie Knight, shared:

"Over the past two months Doris has shown a remarkable improvement since arriving at Silverleigh Care Home for end-of-life support. The change in her overall wellbeing has both been unexpected and deeply encouraging.

Doris has noticeably improved in her physical health. Her appetite has returned, she has gained weight and she appears stronger and more energised.

Her day-to-day mobility and general comfort have also improved, reflecting the high standard of care she receives. Doris regularly joins in with activities and enjoys the company of others. These improvements are a direct result of the fantastic care, compassion and professionalism shown by the staff. We cannot thank you enough."

For the Silverleigh team, seeing Doris flourish has been incredibly rewarding.

As Katherine, Deputy Manager, and Shellie, Administrator, reflected:

"It has been lovely to see Doris flourish again in her daily living. She is visited regularly by her daughter-in-law who always comments on how well she has improved since coming to Silverleigh."

Living Life to the Full

Today, Doris is enjoying life in a way that once seemed unlikely.

She spends her days socialising with friends, joining activities, attending events, enjoying trips out and making the most of every opportunity to stay involved. Her story is a wonderful example of how the right environment, meaningful relationships and personalised support can have a profound impact on wellbeing.

While Doris arrived at Silverleigh needing significant support, she has since found friendship, confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.

Most importantly, she has found a community where she can continue enjoying the life she loves.
